Space Center Houston: How to Make Sure You See the Original Mission Control
Share
The tram tour to NASA's historic Mission Control is included in a regular Space Center Houston ticket, but places are limited and the popular tours fill up, especially on weekends and school holidays. Arrive at opening, on a weekday if you can, and head for the tram first. The exhibits will still be there in the afternoon; the tram seats might not.
That one decision makes the difference between standing in the room that guided the Apollo moon landings and watching other people's photos of it.
π What the tram tour actually is
Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center. The building itself is packed with spacecraft and exhibits, but the highlight sits outside it: a tram that takes you onto the working NASA campus. The route includes historic Mission Control, the room flight controllers worked from during the Apollo missions.
Most first-timers spend their morning on the exhibits and walk to the tram around lunchtime, exactly when the queue is at its longest. Flip that order.
β° When to go
π Space Center Houston opens at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. Check spacecenter.org for the exact hours on your date.
π Monday to Thursday mornings are the quietest.
π Weekends and US school holidays are the busiest, and that's when tours are most likely to sell out early.
πΆ What it costs
π Adults (12 to 64): $29.95
π Children (4 to 11): $24.95
π Children under 3: free
π Parking: $10 per vehicle
Buy your tickets online before you go. It's about $5 per person cheaper than the box office, and you can pick a time slot instead of queuing at the entrance.
π Getting there
Space Center Houston sits about 40 km southeast of downtown Houston, near Clear Lake. There's no practical public transport option for most visitors, so plan on a car. Leave downtown early: Houston's highways are busy in the morning rush, and you want to be at the gate at opening.
π Turn it into a Gulf Coast day
Galveston is only around 50 km further along the same highway. Do Space Center Houston in the morning, then drive on for the beach, the historic Strand district and dinner by the water. It's one of the easiest day plans in Texas, as long as you start early.
ποΈ Houston is more than a space stop
Most travelers treat Houston as a one-day detour for NASA. That's a mistake, because the rest of the city is worth your time too:
π The Museum District has more than enough to fill a full day
π Buffalo Bayou Park has one of the best skyline views in the city
π Saint Arnold, Texas's oldest craft brewery, offers a free tour
π The Galleria is Texas's biggest shopping center, ideal for a rainy afternoon
If you plan to visit several of the big attractions, look at the Houston CityPASS before you buy single tickets. It bundles several of them and can save you real money.
β How many days do you need in Houston?
