When to Visit Austin (and Why the Bats Decide It)

The best time to visit Austin is from March to May or from September to October. That's when the weather is pleasant for walking and swimming, and when around 1.5 million bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge. By November the colony leaves for Mexico, so if you're planning a 2027 trip and want to see the city's most famous free show, plan between March and October.

πŸ¦‡ The bats: Austin's best free show

Every evening in season, a huge colony of Mexican free-tailed bats pours out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge to hunt for insects. In summer, the bridge is home to around 1.5 million of them, and by August more than a million can emerge in a single flight.

What most visitors don't know:

πŸ‘‰ The season runs roughly from March to early November. Pups are born in June, so late summer has the biggest flights.

πŸ‘‰ Weather decides everything. Warm, dry, calm evenings bring the best emergences. Rain or strong wind can keep the bats inside.

πŸ‘‰ Check the forecast before you go. The Austin Bat Refuge posts a daily emergence prediction for the bridge on its website.

πŸ‘‰ Pick your spot by the light. If the bats leave while it's still light, watch from the bridge. If they leave close to dark, the grassy hill on the southeast side of the bridge along Lady Bird Lake is better. You can also watch from a kayak, a paddleboard or a bat cruise.

β˜€οΈ Why not summer?

Summer is peak bat season, but Austin in July and August is hot, with afternoon temperatures regularly above 35Β°C. It's perfectly doable with an early start, a long lunch and the evening on the water, but spring and early fall give you the bats without the heat.

πŸ’§ Book Hamilton Pool before anything else

Hamilton Pool Preserve, the collapsed grotto with a waterfall about an hour west of Austin, is on almost every Austin bucket list. Here's what changed:

πŸ‘‰ Reservations are required every day of the year, through the official Travis County system only.

πŸ‘‰ You choose a morning slot (9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) or an afternoon slot (2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

πŸ‘‰ The online reservation costs $12 per vehicle, plus an entrance fee paid in cash at the gate: $8 per adult, free for children 12 and under.

πŸ‘‰ The trail under the overhang to the base of the waterfall is closed because of falling rocks. You can still reach the beach, but not walk around the pool.

πŸ‘‰ Swimming depends on water quality and recent rain, so it's never guaranteed.

Book as soon as your dates are set, and bring cash and photo ID.
